Alain Leroy Locke became a leading critic and collector of both African and African American art. In an era when African art was hailed by whites for being "primitive" and "pure," Locke insisted on documenting its technical artistry. as one of the earliest critics of black art, he was especially vocal in encouraging black colleges to train more scholars in the field, and as a collector he was responsible for greatly enlarging Howard University's art collection. - Africana Encyclopedia
